Hi! I’m Francesco and I’m an electrical/biomedical engineer, with a PhD in Biophysics (magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)). I am currently a research group leader at the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Basel and senior researcher at the University Hospital of Basel (Switzerland).
I am passionate about Free Software and Open Science and I am a member of the Governing Committee of the Reproducible Research Study Group of ISMRM.
In the last few years, I became more heavily involved with the European Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and Biology, and I am currently serving on the Executive Board as Membership, Media, and Marketing officer.
Together with the ESMRMB, I founded MRI Together, the first global workshop on open science in MRI.
My main projects are about flow and motion, especially functional imaging of the skeletal muscle.
I’m also responsible for MR Safety and a certified MR Safety Expert by the American Board of Magnetic Resonance Safety (ABMRS). I founded the MR Quality and Safety Working Group at the European Society of Radiology and I am its current Chair.
I’m black belt (II dan) in judo, and I am training the Judo club of the Basel University Hospital .
During these last few years I have been enjoying scuba diving in the summer, skiing and snowboarding during the winter. During the year, when I am at home, my hobbies are computers and free software.
A couple of noteworthy projects of mine are Dafne, a federated-learning-based tool for the segmentation of medical images, KoboCloud, a set of scripts to download books from cloud services onto Kobo ebook readers, and python-e3dc, a library to talk to an E3/DC battery/inverter system for solar energy,
